We think of Mary
the mother of Jesus
alone on Calvary,
Golgotha,
at the place of the skull
on what we call Good Friday
for those six hours
in pain, in agony
watching her first-born
become our sacrifice
In some ways, she was
more alone than Jesus
because she was human
just like you and me
she couldn’t understand
that all of these moments
were part of the heavenly plan
that Christ had to be our sacrifice
to give us hope, eternal life
She was alone on Golgotha
on the hill of Calvary
at the place of the skull
standing at the cross
in her pain, in her sorrow,
a sword piercing her soul
for her, her son was dying,
choosing to become our sacrifice
not knowing about Easter,
the joy to come
