breaking her heart

early that Friday morning
though she never got any sleep that night
her son, her flesh and blood
innocent of any crime
but standing judged, beaten,
the crowd crying to “Crucify Him!”
breaking her heart
taking her breath away
there by the Temple
in the courts of Caesar
standing at the foot of the cross
watching her baby die
