Remembering to Exhale

Holding their breath,
listening for danger,
the sirens, the struggle,
sacrifice, determination,
always on guard, on the wall,
on the frontlines against terror,
stretched taut, pulled
to their breaking point…
 
Needing to step back,
to recognize their limits,
remembering to exhale,
to linger away from danger,
to recover, to change
back into themselves
to return to the battle,
suited with new armor…

Stretched Taut

Held in constant tension
pulled to her limit
stretched taut, frozen,
across the breach, the chasm,
no rest, no relenting, danger,
a constant, a reality,
holding on in sacrifice,
in duty to her country…
 
I can hear the tension,
the tremor in her spirit,
words she has spoken before,
when she was asked by others,
letting down her guard,
being brutally honest,
acknowledging how tired she is
stretched to her limit…

She is Ukraina, Ukraine – v2

She is Ukraina, Ukraine,
embodiment of her people,
resolve of a nation,
united in sacrifice,
together for victory,
standing strong, regal,
defiant against their enemy…
 
She is Ukraina, Ukraine,
of the black soil, this land,
this good an ancient people,
stronger than they realize,
but holding onto humanity,
against terror, the onslaught,
the genocide of the tyrant…
 
She is Ukraina, Ukraine,
tired but standing defiant,
smiling through the darkness,
a beacon of hope for others,
fighting because she must,
defending her homeland, her people,
Ukraine that she loves so much…

The challenge in their question,
how I see myself, a sinner,
echoes of the tax collector,
his prayer, my thoughts…
 
Worse than most,
my sins feel like weights,
a burden on my spirit,
all that I have lost…
 
I am in sackcloth and ashes,
repentant of my ways,
I long to walk with Jesus,
the Savior of my days…

200 on the rear panel – v2

Russia gathering their war dead,
a white flag sufficient, telling, a witness,
the humanity of Ukraine in these moments,
Russia, able to leave the battlefield, protected,
shrouded by their humble spirits, of their victims,
the same people who kneel for funeral processions,
not the cruelty of the aggressors, this Satan,
a nation of lost souls without humanity,
willing to attack as she gathers her dead…
 
Not a stretcher or a gurney, something
to hold their pain, their sorrow, Ukraine,
too urgent, in this moment, fearful,
watching for Russia’s double-tap…
just plastic bags, a soon-stained sheet,
a lifeless body being brought to the street
no time for formality, though reverently,
his humanity placed in the open van,
the doors slamming shut…
 
A “200” on the rear panel, plainly visible,
stark in its presence, to minimize the danger,
to make vehicles less of a target, to survive,
in large, prominent numbers, a herald,
signs in cold black and white, sterile,
their precious cargo, life that was stripped
by the terror of Russia, another war crime,
bombing civilians, drones, missiles, taking,
stealing his life and their history…
 
Chilling in the starkness, the video
this memory, this moment, graphic,
the sound of the van’s doors shutting,
before the body bag arrives at the morgue…
grabbing my attention, a reminder, a sign,
of the finality of these moments, a red line
crossed by Russia, wanton brutality, genocide,
their relentless attack, this Satan, this anti-Christ,
200 on the rear panel, leave the sirens off…

A living rainforest – v2

A gift of the Creator,
my eyes open to wonder
to the magic of this moment,
to stop, to lean in
to see more clearly,
treasure in the little…
drawn to beauty,
that surrounds us all…
 
Down on my knees
drawn by vibrant color
a living rainforest
down below the tops
of the wheat stalks
of the grasses…
verdant green calling,
putting on my glasses…
 
Living chartreuse,
shimmering in the sunlight,
the new grass of spring,
now towering over me,
almost iridescent, alive,
drawing me inward,
to live, to explore, richly,
in this precious moment…

A living rainforest

Down on my knees
drawn by vibrant color
a living rainforest
down below the tops
of the wheat stalks
of the grasses…
verdant green calling,
putting on my glasses…
 
Living chartreuse,
shimmering in the sunlight,
the new grass of spring,
now towering over me,
almost iridescent, alive,
drawing me inward,
to live, to explore, richly,
in this precious moment…

Not a stretcher or a gurney, something

to hold their pain, their sorrow, Ukraine,
too urgent, in this moment, fearful,

The cross is proof
there will be tomorrow,
that this time, these days,
will not be our last,
by the living Christ,
by the veil being torn…
 
The cross is the proof
of the resurrection, of life,
the ancient symbol of power,
transformed by Jesus,
by His rising from the grave,
by the empty tomb…
 
The cross is the proof
of Christ’s identity, His power,
that the resurrection happened,
that we have new life,
by Christ’s ascension,
by His promise to return…

Eyes that have seen too much – v3

I hear the sorrow, the disquiet,
your furrowed brow, your tears,
the relentless loss of life, sorrow,
pain that sometimes grips you,
I am so happy when I see you smile,
when light pierces the darkness…
 
Your soulful, caring eyes,
so tired from the weight,
through the crucible of war,
a window on your spirit, so telling,
eyes that have seen too much,
that yet carry such a burden…
 
I hear your hope for a future,
a restoration of your culture,
for peace to come to Ukraine,
your nation’s flag on every flagpole,
endless wheat fields and blue skies,
like the flag of your people…
 
Oh, I pray for that day, that moment,
for that day to come suddenly,
when peace returns to Ukraina,
when all the fallen may truly rest,
the return of your nation’s children,
all those released from captivity…
