Shevchenko’s despair was overwhelming,
Living as a member of the diaspora,
alone in prison, abandoned,
believing hate, the lie,
He was not good enough…
 
What a difference he made
in the lives of his people
his love for Ukraine, Ukraina,
self-evident, present,
in every word, in each breath…
 
His is the one true voice, the exemplar,
the first among equals, the hero…
What a great difference, eternal,
His life meant so much to his homeland,
for Ukraine, for freedom, for all of us…
