Here you go, Dad - v2

unlocking the church
standing In the entry way
looking across the street
a father and son
getting ready for the hunt

A father with a hat
of blaze orange
denims and plaid shirt
standing on the bumper
loading the Chevy truck

I wish I had a camera
to capture that moment
his son holding a bag
little hand raising
the drink for him

“Here you go, Dad”,
I could hear the gesture
offering him morning
love poured out
in his little hand raised

offering him morning
something important
before the deer hunt

all is given – v2

all is given, all is clean
acceptable to God
the bounty of creation;
taste of God’s bounty
rise, kill and eat

on two and four feet
from the sky to the seas
the creatures and dry land;
taste of God’s bounty
rise, kill and eat

the whole of the earth

the plants and the animals
given into our hands
our responsibility, our charge
in all of creation
we alone given authority
becoming sovereign
caretakers for God
to watch, to cherish
to eat of the harvest
plants and animals
to bounty of earth.

Blaze orange on the end cap – v2

the stores laid out
the things to grab quickly
fly dope, bug spay
maps and compasses
things for the deer camps
the lodges, the cabins
all quick, within reach

impulse buys different
up here, up north, by the woods
apples and tortilla chips
yes they are familiar
something I have seen before
but usually a different placement
further from the front door
further out in the store

blaze orange on the end caps
right by the door
caps, vests, jackets
bug spray and blankets
ready for quick purchase
a dead moose, heavy
a trophy on display
in the pickup out front

Stripped of the Green

peeling off the world
the mask of summer
stripped of the green
exposing the true colors
the many shades of autumn
hidden for a season
so we are to be
authentic in our journey
true to the cross of Jesus
stripped of the world
open and honest
showing our true colors
