Disturbing the Spiders

For a few moments
on the side of the house
the main thing I was doing
wasn’t painting, not even scraping.
I was disturbing the spiders,
the big fat spiders, the residents
of the wall over the peeling paint
They hovered expectantly waiting for prey
protecting their egg sacks, their children,
and I was the intruder into their world,
not the other way around.
