Choosing a Black Tie

In getting ready for the day
the worship, the sermon
the message on this gray, rainy day
appropriate somehow
knowing the words of scripture
the place in the passion
Christ’s trial before the righteous
sentenced for speaking the truth
of who he is, the living God
come to save his people

Choosing a black tie
not bright and springy
no flowers or happy colors
solemn, like the glowering day
the sound of the rain falling
heavy on the house, the ground
appropriate for the message
the blindness of the people
refusing to see the Lord
standing before them
Christ, Emmanuel
