crimson bars
between the rows of white
under the stars
our freedom burns bright
the blood of our heroes
given for us
standing watch in the darkness
that we would be free
the cost of freedom
blood of our youth
on guard, on station
in the places beyond

“Barbara Freitchie”,
by John Greenleaf Whittier
