as Christ did, we turn our face toward Jerusalem
to David’s city, the Temple, the city of power
that place where the prophets were murdered
seeking to walk with Christ into the city
to be one of his disciples, the twelve
Putting on the sandals, the dust on our feet
perhaps the smell of the fishermen
imaging ourselves with callouses like they had
men who worked with their hands, with tools
Smelling the dust in our mouths, the smoke of the incense
the way rough before us, with danger
trying to understand Christ’s words, his parables,
in the present, not as history, right there with him
Watching what our Master did, in the flesh
how he healed the sick, the broken, each one
knowing how much he heals, curing ills
because of our own healing, redeeming
Our hearts turn toward that journey, so long ago,
to his final days, his passion, now
to the journey triumphant into the city
and to his journey to the cross
