I take this cup from my lips,
quenched
I step back from the
journey, the road
the revelation of His fate
there in Gethsemane, in
Jerusalem
Like Socrates and his
hemlock
brought to his own lips
thinking about this moment
the cup that Jesus drank
the gravity of His decision
the power of His sacrifice
the weight of His grace
A cup of crimson
a blood sacrifice
the Passover Lamb
innocent blood shed
for me, for you
poured, an offering,
the altar of the cross
A parable in wine
a cup of crimson
shared at His last supper
at their last meal together
the table of remembrance
repeated and believed
though they did not
understand
An act of ritual and faith
in the communion
God’s new covenant
coming to the table with
Christ
hearing His words in the
upper room
the same words in
remembrance
for you, for me, for us all
In memory and love,
together,
coming to the table, to the
meal
our Passover, our liberation
by His decision, Christ’s
cup
in Gethsemane, in Jerusalem
