sad, really
wearing them firmly
almost glued, permanent,
masks of convention
conformity to the group
fears hidden, silent,
not fully revealed
our true stories
under our masks
fearing we would become
the sinners, the outcasts
those on the outside
pining for warmth
not sharing fully
remaining guarded
opening the crack only
the rest remaining hidden
under our masks
if we are honest, guarded,
not trusting completely
open, vulnerable
walling off part of ourselves
to be part of the group
accepted, liked,
in this life, really,
hidden part of ourselves
under our masks
