the enormity of our sin

thoughts come unbidden
of blood, of the angry mob
shouting, “Crucify! Crucify him!”
to kill the Son of God
Tears falling, heavy,
sweat, anguish
ancient dust, the smoke
no joy, not understanding,
the Passion of the Lord

ashes on our hearts
these images seared
upon our hearts, our minds
heavy chains of sorrow
smoke in our lungs, heavy
Remembering all too well
harkening back to the trial
the lies, our spit upon Him
accusing God of Blasphemy

monstrous when we consider
when we slow down to remember
in the night, in our hearts
in quiet reflection, painful,
when darkness falls around us
The enormity of our sin
false imprisonment, the trial
handing God over to be sacrificed
to be hung on the cross, a criminal

the pain He suffered
the Passion of the Lord
images far too painful
the nails, the thorns, the shouts
The bitter taste of bile
the dryness of His mouth
His sacrifice for us, yet;
these thoughts come unbidden
What we did to Christ.
