A monument, long in coming
of some open scar tissue
a stain on our lives
a chapter of evil
when we jailed Americans
because they were different
nothing they had done.
A crane with barbed wire in
its bill
a pool of water
tears spill off the rim
a memorial to our shame
their loss, at American
hands
our people in chains.
Sanctioned by the President,
by Congress,
by Korematsu, the Court;
A stain that endured, echoes
in Abu Ghraib
and Guantanamo Bay,
holding people still.
