The Granary – v3

Suddenly, without warning
a demon in sharp focus;
I met evil, coming indoors
from the bright summer day
on the Vineyard, so long ago.

His eyes were full of hate, rage
at the intrusion, the actor, the Jew;
Exposed, naked in the photograph
his tortured, twisted soul laid bare.

What must it have been for the photographer,
for the journalist, the truth teller,
the Jew looking through his lens
seeing the face of evil, pungent,
toxic lasers piercing his spirit?

The emulsion coming to dark life
in the quickening of the darkroom;
So disconcerting, even on the glossy page,
evil incarnate, glaring right through me.

The Granary – v2

The Granary
This poem is about my memory,
of the jarring sensation
seeing a photograph circa 1994,
of one of the all-time
great pictures, capturing evil,
before it rose up to full flowering
of Joseph Goebbels,
in 1933 at the League of Nations
Life Magazine article about the photo
on display at The Granary Gallery
on Martha’s Vineyard
taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898 - 1995),
a master of black and white. Photojournalist of the century,
