the crowd wearing yellow stars – v2

their lives shattered, broken
in a night of evil, Kristallnacht
at the beginning, a sea of people
the crowd wearing yellow stars
over 100,000 with them
a third of the town
the Jews Hitler gathered up

history hard on them
now only 800, 12 children only
when they were given freedom
their yellow stars saved them
the mark of their religion
the Jews remaining
leaving the ghetto

The Granary – v2

The Granary
This poem is about my memory,
of the jarring sensation
seeing a photograph circa 1994,
of one of the all-time
great pictures, capturing evil,
before it rose up to full flowering
of Joseph Goebbels,
in 1933 at the League of Nations
Life Magazine article about the photo
on display at The Granary Gallery
on Martha’s Vineyard
taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898 - 1995),
a master of black and white. Photojournalist of the century, http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9911/eisieintro.htm.
