I have been selfish

I have been on guard
I have put on a mask
I have been hurt deeply,
and I have hurt others
I have been selfish in my life…
 
I have had much taken from me
my sense of self, of joy,
I have yanked them back to me
sometimes violently, reflexive,
I have hurt those I love…
 
I have been selfish
I have lived in the flesh
taken what was not mine
to love, to cherish,
I have sent cracks in time…
