well-worn ruts

we use coping mechanisms, drugs,
idols, well-worn ruts, patterns,
all the ways we medicate,
to mitigate our pain,
often making our way harder
separating us from our neighbors,
separating us from God…
 
we are damaged, broken,
bearing the sins we carry
lost in the world, walking
in the well-worn ruts, in patterns,
slouching our way forward
leading us away from God,
The source of our strength…
 
we turn toward God, repentant,
we must renounce our sin, confessing,
all the ways we struggle
on the well-worn path, the ruts,
our go-to medications
that simply mask our pain
when we long to be healed…
