We are victims of our patterns
steps repeated, often,
like ant scent trails,
ruts, neural pathways,
deeply ingrained, practiced,
Synaptic connections firing,
When we experience spiritual pain…
 
Our instinct overcomes reason,
an amygdala hijack, a crisis,
not thinking rationally, truly,
falling into the same patterns,
harmful strategies rooted deeply
Our snake brain deep inside us
When we experience spiritual pain…
 
We don’t want to address root causes,
just medicating our symptoms,
Band-Aids on gaping, open wounds,
Some carried for decades
buried in our reptilian brains,
firing out of control, without reason,
When we experience spiritual pain…
 
We need to break the cycle, the pattern,
to create new pathways, new thinking,
to quarry the root causes,
Our fears, our pains buried,
the well-worn ruts of our history,
synaptic connections firing instinctively,
When we experience spiritual pain…
 
Only when we are honest, transparent,
digging down deeply, seeking,
then can we achieve healing,
breaking the cycle within us,
only in creating a new pattern,
step out of time, responding differently
When we experience spiritual pain…
