blood on our hands - v3

so many towns, locations, moments,
names which we know, staggering,
innocents slaughtered
in halls, classrooms
a raging inferno
Hell here below

blood on our hands
mental health forgotten
in name of freedom
carnage repeating
guns now increase
more will be purchased

will reason intervene,
will spines be stiffened
will a filibuster be broken,
stepping back from the brink
or will more arms be loosed
in our land, on the streets

words of resolve – v2

words of metal
words of trust
words to guide
in the night
words of resolve
words of courage
words from the Spirit
from our lips
words of hope
words of a future
words of God’s promise
to guide us home
words of life
words of sacrifice
words to perfect us
in our walk
words to define
words of a people
words of our trust
in Almighty God

How long, O Lord

our lament with them
with David, with the people,
“How long, O Lord,
must I suffer in the darkness;
how long with I travel
in this wilderness
lost in the briars
in the struggles on this journey
mired in spiritual pain?”
we know this lament
we journey under its weight
this cloak of sorrow
wanting to feel you
to be lifted from this burden
these dead ends
to journey in the light
in your presence.
“How long,” we ask;
but we need to be patient
to wait on you
and you holy wisdom
in whatever we do.

Strip us of violence – v2

Strip us of violence
the Cult of the Gun
the coarseness, the language
holding us down
pulling us apart

Raise up people
to speak against rage
the divisions that hurt us
healing our nation
changing this age

Give us freedom
a sense of our liberty
this heightened control
armed to the teeth
not making us free

So many guns
blood in the street
confrontation escalating
so many victims
our sorrow replete
