Ever clay, failing to follow
to comprehend his gift
to accept grace completely
so weak in living
by the example of Christ
so unworthy to touch
even the dust of his feet
the thong of this sandal
even to wash
the earth from his presence
the grime from his feet

on seeing the title of the poem,
“The Thong of His Sandal”, as I prepared to post it
to the www.christianpoetry.org
The Thong of His Sandal
Oh, I know, so well
the words of John
I am so unworthy
not even to touch
the thong of his sandal
The dust of the road
the dirt of the path
his eyes set on Jerusalem
going before me
leading me
climbing the cross
in my place
Oh yes, I am aware
painful in my guilt
of my lowly state
utterly unworthy
of his amazing grace.
