If Christ came to earth
like a thief in the night
would he come as an angel
or an orphan or unknown birth
Would we recognize him
as one like these
would we shun him, ignore him
or would we fall to our knees
Why does it surprise me, confuse me
that this voice would be named Emmanuel
God with us ever, calling to us
to see the world with his eyes
the eyes of our King
calling us ever
hoping we would sing
that we would dance with our creator
our brother, our God
that we would stand, move mountains
that we would care more somehow
The voice of an angel
Emmanuel, what else,
dying, rising, calling to us,
it is a test
to believe a little more
to share God’s love
offered, and paid for
in the way of the cross
living, dying
that we may have life
