out our kitchen
window
above the white New
England church
fifty feet further
away
or maybe one hundred
yet the bird
seemingly lifted,
distances
foreshortened,
buoyed on the edge of
the smoke
the wisps of clouds
dancing
fingers of gossamer white
maybe cotton candy
before the pale robin’s
egg blue
of winter’s morning
the bird rising,
soaring with,
on the edge of the
smoke
only a short moment
trying to look back
to capture
but the brief spell
broken
the actors already
parted
the bird flying
separate
no longer tethered,
flying, rising
on the edge of the
smoke
