From before our
beginnings
clay in our mother’s
womb
life-giving waters,
smooth, steam
waters of life, of
death, storms
waters sometimes
killing, silent,
contamination, the
hand of man, chemicals
hidden dangers,
crescendo, hiding in plain sight,
in ice or snow,
falling,
pouring cold from the
heavens
pure, yet holding the
minerals, the sun,
light, dripping in a
soft summer shower
life in giving
waters, open, ready
raging down from the
mountains
racing down the
rivers, to the sea,
frozen, melting from
the ice caps
etching ancient stone
smooth
flowing to the sea,
the to ocean
held within its
boundaries
warm waters touching
the hot sand, the shoreline
giant waves eroding
the beach where we stand
smoothing my feet, my
spirit, tiny grains of former stone
feeding my soul,
silent, eternal waters
the tides
controlling, water sliding back and forth
a small drop, a
basin, gathered together
frozen hard in
winter, until spring breaks that grip
the cycle beginning,
returning, eternal,
from before we were
born
