He took no responsibility,
no ownership, none,
for the injustice, the
unholy death
of the innocent man
Absolving himself,
washing the stain from his
hands
cleaning the tattoo, as if
he could,
with mere soap and water
Washing away the killing
of righteousness, expedient
to temporary quell the
rebellion,
to maintain order, for a
moment
Sacrificing unblemished
flesh
to the jackals in the
courtyard
A curse brought upon himself
in trying to wash away the
guilt
