pain and blessing intermingled

the story of Mary
the handmaiden of the Most High
the virgin bride and the mother of Jesus
her story, in her own life,
and her relationship with Jesus
deep and complicated
blessing and pain intermingled
love for her child yet
knowing He is our Savior
not wanting Him to be hurt
but knowing He was the sacrifice
the One who would save us
the One long prophesied
the babe in the manger
and the man on the cross

life in the sorrow, in the suffering
something that Mary knew
the hope of resurrection
found in the garden
in Christ’s utter submission
praying to God above
for the cup to be taken from Him
life in the journey, in the cross,
in the way of the suffering servant
hope in the way of Christ
in the way that led through the cross
to His prayer for all of us
and His taking care of Mary
giving her to John to care for
even as His life slipped away

the journey to Golgotha
from the streets of Palm Sunday
the Passion Week unfolding
within the walls of Jerusalem
in the Temple, and before Pilate
in the Upper Room with them
only leaving to go to Bethany
to linger on the Mount of Olives
praying at Gethsemane, crying out
for the cup to be taken away
the salvation gift of the cross
the darkness and redemption
all of the journey like this
pain and blessing intermingled
from the manger to the cross

a new way of living
of how to be faithful
in the ministry of Jesus
nothing like what they had ever known
not bound by ancient ritual
by language that had lost its meaning
God alive, in the flesh
journeying with the, sharing
what God truly meant
the Spirit within the Law
the Word come to dwell
the Light shining in the darkness
to keep us from going to oblivion
to spend eternity wishing
we had listened to Him

something infinitely different
walking with Christ Jesus
journeying the earth with God
walking with the Savior
the ever-present gift of God’s grace
pouring out, a wellspring,
washing over all us
never again to know thirst
save for the thirst to know Him
to walk more closely with Him
all within the walk of Christ
the babe of the manger
the man of the cross
the King rising to Glory
and the One who will return
