I quietly, slowly, gently,
pulled the door together
going back into the warmer house
on this morning in September
before Fall on the calendar
but cool before 7:00am
Leaving the two old friends
out on the porch
sharing a laugh, a few old stories
shared memories,
this treasured time together
They are best friends,
friends for forty years,
so far, that is,
friends for life
so much alike, so giving
Hearts on their sleeves,
Lives of pain, lives filled with love
guided by hope and faithfulness,
loyalty, through the trials, the challenges
the heartache of life
Joined by blood, by love
sharing a smoke and a joke
a laugh and a few tears
knowing each other oh so well,
mother and daughter,
old friends, starting their day
