If
we listen to these words
the
story of that people
of
their slavery in Egypt
of
the choice of their leader;
hearing
the thread of history
echoing
down through the ages
Echoes
in our own land
of
another time, a leader
freeing
our fellow man;
war
was the crucible
reforming,
refining
reshaping
our union
and
freeing that people
Echoes
too, this century
struggles
of that same people
seeking
greater liberty
respect,
the right to vote;
equality
in our time
a
more perfect union
A
more perfect nation
but
the work continues;
when
race will not matter;
our
journey not complete
more
work remaining
until
all are truly equal
equal
to our creed
