painted with grains of sand – v7

the hills alive on this morning
dipped in winter light
painted with grains of sand;
pure sparkle, diamonds
on every filament, fiber,
on each blade of grass.

facets of the ice crystals
twinkling as I drive beside them
holding God’s light, as a prism;
sparks of living color, glinting
fingers of Jack’s paint strokes
dipped, cast, in frozen white.

the hills alive in the sunlight
shimmering, the fields afire
morning just begun, waking;
filaments of sparkle
painted before the sunlight
the morning drive to work.

The multicolored ball – v6

despair made me remember
his moment of terror
freezing cold, as he was
no coat, no sweater
no meat on his bones
bruised, in panic
wanting his friend,
the ball he had carried
wanting to run to it
but already lined up
waiting, compliant
to return to the classroom
not wanting to break any rules
(for there had been consequences when he
had broken other rules)
but secretly watching

left, discarded, gathered by the wind
finding a place, resting,
in the lee of the storage shed
just a few feet away from us
but too far to run to it,
we both had our places, our roles to play
not able to run to gather it in
needing to walk away, to get out of the cold
a multicolored ball, an old friend
the ball he had taken outside
before the day took its turn
his slight body now buffeted
by the wind, the switchbacks
by falling on the granite dust
navigating the thin wood
the place beyond the fields
where he and the other played

now he was captured, by the clock, by convention,
standing in line, shivering in the cold
the too-thin, threadbare t-shirt
not nearly enough, the open sweatshirt
his body shuddering, waiting
for the bell to ring, but what of the ball
that lost but not forgotten
but really not that far away, tantalizing,
outside the bounds of his grasp
wanting to be free, unfettered
breaking the rules to run to get it
out of the question, absurd
another to retrieve it, to gather it in,
like a basketball, in shape,
but colors of summer, once bright,
now faded on the ground

The multicolored ball – v5

despair made me remember
his moment of sheer terror
freezing cold, as he was
bruised, in panic, at a moment of loss
wanting his friend, I could see it
the ball he had carried, his body crying
wanting to run to it, to be rebellious
but already lined up, waiting
waiting, compliant, a good boy,
to return to the classroom
not wanting to break any rules
but secretly watching, wanting

left, discarded, gathered by the wind
finding a place, resting, silent
in the lee of the storage shed
a multicolored ball, his old friend
the ball he had taken outside
before the day took its turn
his slight body now buffeted
by the wind, the switchbacks
by falling on the granite dust
navigating the thin wood

They’re outside

sparks of yellow, of white
out in my backyard
they’re outside in the grass
full of shadows
of wonder and sparkles
setting the yard afire

I caught a lightning bug
in a glass jar
we played in the dark
by its faint light
they’re outside
in the grass
in my backyard

painted with grains of sand – v4

Painted with grains of sand
dipped in winter light;
pure sparkle, diamonds
on each filament, reaching,
every blade of grass.

Facets of the crystals -
twinkling as I drive.
Holding God’s light, a prism,
sparks of glinting color, alive!
Fingers of Jack’s paint strokes,
cast in frozen white

The hills ablaze with sunlight
shimmering, the fields afire;
morning just begun,
filaments of sparkle;
painted before the sun.

under the frozen morning – v2

the late-November fields
in a palette of autumn-winter
shades of brown, of gray,
hidden, in wonder
under the frozen morning
in white and rainbow
painted by Jack Frost
in glitter and sparkle
held for a few moments only
until they started to melt

painted with sparkle

with individual points of light
painted with sparkle
every reed, each blade of grass
everything on the hillside

the fields cut after gleaning
the rolling, living hills
painted with sparkle
with filaments of white

the handwork of sleeping
before the waking dawn
frost adorning each plant
to the horizon line

millions of pixels

millions of pixels
of faceted sparkle
as if each grain of sugar
was fitted in fiber

not merely reflecting light
as if hard-wired
illumined fields alive
dancing in the moment

frost alive
a living creation
filaments of light
as far as I can see

autumn hills glowing
before the warming
grasses and the bramble
proclaim November’s glory

wired in celebration

painted on the grasses

sparkling sugar, each granule
glowing, shining
out in the dark world

filaments of light
fiber optics glowing
making the morning bright
complete in the knowing
