In the First Breath of Autumn
Going outside this morning
the crispness, the bite of the morning
quick against my nose
in the first breath of autumn
my exhaling visible
caught in the still air
as I went down the stairs
ready to start the day
to take the girls to school
so soon the cold to come
the leaves to fall heavy from the trees
the snow on the way
