Like arms of gray
like strands of silver
braided, and twisting
rising from the ground
The bodies of the supple dancers
their lithe torsos, arms
entwined in the melody
frozen for eternity
In the fabric
the flesh
of the trunk,
the branches,
some cut off
amputated
Yet trembling
before the woodman’s ax
change coming
the lovers to be cut down
soon, too soon
in the name of progress
