Feed My Sheep – v7

One man on the beach, calling
Christ waiting for them there
with fish, a breakfast, a meal to share
Peter saw him, jumping into the water
unclean, unworthy, to come into his presence
knowing what he had done, denying his Savior
alive, with them, a mixed blessing for him
coming closer, with the others, not ready
for what came next, a test, forthcoming
words of challenge, of history, of moment
testing his love, his faithfulness

“Follow me, and feed my sheep,”
spoke the Master to the Rock
challenging him, testing his love
a sheep made a shepherd, the seed planted
to germinate within him, growing
until the seed began to bear fruit
the flames ignited his fire, his mouth
giving him voice that Pentecost
after the cloistering, the separation
of the apostles, the first on the way
hidden, timid, waiting for that day

These were Christ’s words, affirming in threes,
that it was his responsibility, three times
just as was his denial, that night after the garden
when the twelve followers, ran
fell away from the Master
These were Christ’s words,
spoken in reconciliation, painful,
the admonition and response
“Follow me, feed my sheep”;
“Yes Lord, I will,
go as I am sent.”
