we try to name our family

we try to name our family
to put boundaries on responsibility
we ask with Cain’s ancient question,
“Am I my brother’s keeper?”,
yet wanting a different answer
to be able to keep our stuff
to shut our door to our neighbors
judging their work ethic, lazy,
setting them apart, unworthy,
we try to limit the number
of those to whom we owe something
but they are God’s messengers
hidden in those we cast out
