the self-preservation instinct – v2

deep within us
not thought, reason
the self-preservation instinct
something ancient, primordial,
the fight or flight response
of all mammals
engrained within us
to keep us alive.

deep within us
hard-coded, engrained
part of our beings
since the beginning of time
our sin instinct
our root preference
selfish, short-sighted
as our first response.
