More than an example
the life of Christ
God emptied, poured
coming to the earth
Love come down
walking among us
a measure of love
what it means to follow
Submitting to God
offering his all
even on that night
a word of instruction
A measure of love
more than an example
a command to follow
to love as he loves us

A rubric of love
the measure of his words
what it means to love
a rubric of love
in the example of Christ
what the ancient words mean
a new commandment, a model
a rubric to follow
in the example of Christ
how loves us

A standard of love
How we live our lives
whether or not we love
a standard of love
in the commandment of Christ
To love as he loves
our neighbors, ourselves
sacrificial love

When Christ spoke these words
A new commandment
precious little time
before the betrayer would return
speaking to them a new commandment
a new understanding of love
When Christ spoke these words
the Passover, the upper room,
together with his disciples
on the night of his betrayal

In the upper room
gathered for the Passover
after washing their feet
the betrayer running, leaving

The Context of these words
what Christ spoke to them
speaking to us
important in the words he spoke
but in the context of these words
giving a richer meaning
what it means to love
the commandment to love
to love as Christ loved
more than as we would love
according to the law
something profound where
he spoke these words
right before he died
after the betrayer ran away
into that night

A heavenly example of love
Christ gave them an example
choosing his words for them
to give them a measure to follow
how to love our fellow man
A heavenly example of love
to love as Christ loves
to offer up our lives
to the Father in heaven above us
our lives a sacrifice
to love our sisters, our brothers
as our Savior, the Christ

Maybe another way
to understand the commandment

As Christ loves - 2
Nothing so direct
no parable, no pretext
after Judas ran into the night
speaking to the disciples
A new command, commandment
spoken to them that night
in the upper room, prayerful
full of dread and fright
We are to love
not by the ancient law
to love our neighbors as ourselves
our God over all
More than this, much more
to love as Christ loves us
the lamb, the sacrifice
the living Son still within
abiding here with us

We must love
Not a prayer, a suggestion
but a command of God
Christ, the Son, Messiah
in the upper room
We must love
as he loves us
giving up his life
even letting the betrayer
go out into the night
The words he spoke to them
ringing down through time
what God means by love
not a prize but a stumbling block
proof to us that we need
Christ’s sacrifice on the cross

As God loves
We must love
if we truly follow
if we want to claim the name
disciples of Christ
We must love
according to the new commandment
to love our fellow man
as God loves us
By the example of Jesus -
letting Judas go, betrayer
accepting the cup, the stain
climbing the cross for us

New Understanding of Love
The command to love
to love God, to love our neighbor
a new understanding of love
to love as Christ loved us
as God loves us still
dying for our living
giving his life for all
Christ submitting to the Father
paying the price for us
a new command, a witness
how we should live
truly loving our neighbor
by the example of Christ

As He has loved us
The ancient words freed of their chains
the bonds of human DNA
Christ speaking out of love
what it means to love
A new command, a teaching
the measure of our walk
not to love as we would love

An Example
Christ giving meaning
what the ancient words said
why this was a new commandment
not restating the past
The words of the law
what the scholars would have said
to love our God
and our neighbors as ourselves
Christ went further
beyond the mortal choice
to love as God loved
our Savior before us
We are to love one another
not as the ancient code
but to love as Christ loves us
speaking a new word to them
hours before he would give up his life
commanding a new law for us
as Judas prowled the night

Unbound by the Flesh
Christ is calling us
in the words that night
a new law, commandment
in following the Christ
To love as Christ loved
our brothers, our sisters,
unbound by the flesh
the way of the earth
Following our brother
our Savior, Messiah
making choices
righteous in God’s sight
Standing for justice
healing those in pain
offering ourselves a witness
standing in Christ’s name

Bound by human capacity
Was Christ merely prayerful
our did he mean must
that we should love as he did
a command to all of us
Are we bound by human capacity
or can we do what he said
can we love as Christ loves
is it in our DNA

What Christ meant by love - 2
Christ’s words to his disciples
the eleven in the room
there after the Passover meal
after Judas ran into the night
told a new commandment
with power and might
What Christ meant by love
God’s teaching to us
not the ancient words of the law
but Love living with us
living not as mere mortals
but sharing the love of God

How would Jesus love
His commandment to love
not as we would love
to love as he loved
as he loves us still
If that is the commandment
the new command of Christ
our question should be
to guide us in this life
How would Jesus love
what kindness would he impart
how can we follow him
in everything we do

Christ’s blood and our hearts – v3
Only when they are together
the union of Christ’s blood
God’s sacrifice, his grace,
and our lives, our hearts
only when they beat as one
Christ’s Spirit indwelling
guiding our steps
only then can we fulfill
Christ’s teaching
his new commandment for us
Christ said to the believers
the eleven in the upper room
a new commandment, a teaching
going beyond the law
To love not each other
not by the measure of ourselves
to love as Christ loves us
giving us his best
all that he had to give
his life on the cross

The Measure for my life
Not my own nature
the fallen person, man
not from the scripture
the ancient word of God
The new command
the testimony,
the living, breathing Christ
his call to love as he did
the measure for my life.

Following a false measure
Judging ourselves against the world
the way others follow
falling a false measure
when the scales are balanced
when we are judged
when we come before God
Christ is the measure
what he said to them
we must love our neighbors
our neighbors as ourselves
But there was more that Christ said
why this was a new commandment
we are to love as Christ loves us,
the true measure of our witness,
our walk in this life
not by mere mortals
but the way of Christ

Doing what God requires – v2
God isn’t vague, unclear
his formula not so difficult
doing what God requires
listen to his word
following his commandments
Just what God asks of us
believing enough, faithful
trusting in the word of God
not asking so much
the potter to the clay
We put position, status,
our place in this world
above humble submission
doing what God asks of us
to trust in his provision

Cleansing
Not just healing, binding up wounds
removing sickness, made new
something deeper, magnificent, profound
God’s healing, cleansing our sick
removing the stain
helping us to live
Made whole, restored
in the gentleness of his touch
choosing to reach out
to offer us his love

removing sickness, made new
something deeper, magnificent, profound
God’s healing, cleansing our sick
removing the stain
helping us to live
Made whole, restored
in the gentleness of his touch
choosing to reach out
to offer us his love

follow our own path
It is true we each are called
a specific plan of God
to walk in the path
laid out for us
but that is very different
than to follow our own path
one is obedient
one against the will of God

We wander from God
We wander from God

thinking we know the path

Doing what God requires
The formula not so difficult
doing what God requires
listen to his word
following his command
Just what God asks of us
believing enough
trusting in the word of God
not asking so much
We put position, status,
above humble submission
all God asks of us
to trust in his provision

Why this was a new command – v2
Ancient words of Leviticus
the law, the Mosaic code
long before their eyes
the words of God for them
an indictment of the people
To love their neighbors
other people as themselves
offering love to them
as they love the Father
loving them, offering their best
Why were the words of Jesus
why this was a new commandment
understood in the context
He said to love as He did
God in the flesh
The words important
but where he said them too
something profound, layered
spoken after he let Judas leave
setting his death in motion
This was what Christ meant by love
to love as he did, unconditional
offering our lives, a sacrifice
to save all whom we meet
giving all we are for our neighbors

In the canvas of heaven

God assigns each star a name
in the whole of the cosmos
numbering the hairs upon our head
loving us richly, holding us closely,
our lives in his loving hand

The canvas of the heavens
In the fabric of the night sky
stretched above the dome
the shimmering lights
the hand of the creator
setting each to right
He assigns each star a name
in the whole cosmos
sequins in the night
loving us richly
each one of us a star
A light shining brightly
in his loving hands
holding us closely,
alive with the Spirit’s fire
sharing the blood of the lamb.

Like the skin of a drum
Stretching a piece of living fabric
out of the nothingness of space
in grading, shades and colors,
tailing from our sight
Hues of azure, indigo, violet, black
bits of living fabric
shimmering, sequined, bejeweled canvas
like the new skin of a drum
pulled into position, new music
Hands of God, pulling, drawing
stretching the tent of the heavens
over the dome, the foundation
God’s design, the framework of creation
A living canvas,
arc of the heavenly firmament
seeking to show us majesty, God’s glory
shooting stars across a night sky

Why this was a new command
The ancient words of Leviticus
the law, the Mosaic code
long before their eyes
the indictment of the people
To love their neighbors
the people as themselves
offering love to them
offering their best
Why this was a new command
understood in context
He said to love as He did
God in the flesh
The words important
but where he said them too
after he let Judas leave
setting his death in motion
This was what Christ meant by love
to love as he did, unconditional
offering our lives
all we are for our neighbors

What Christ meant by Love
Christ spoke to them
the eleven in the upper room
immediately after Satan/Judas departed
out to betray him
What Christ meant by love
why it was a new commandment
not the ancient words of the law
something more substantial
Love, as he loved,
not just for our neighbor
to love unconditionally
offering Christ to them
What Christ mean by love
not limit, eternal
giving them ourselves
holding nothing back

Compelled to Proclaim the Gospel – v2
Christ's followers,
joining with Paul
his profession of obligation,
his feeling of a call
joining with him
Compelled to proclaim
Christ’s gospel
God’s endless love
coming from heaven
sent from above
To reach down a message
to share God’s love
the Word of the Christ
the Word made flesh
come to earth, living with us.

Unintelligible Prayers - v2
Prayers deep within us
musings of our hearts
sometimes with no words
emotions tearing us apart
Unintelligible prayers
to others, if they heard them,
yet words of love, of petition,
lifted up to heaven
To the listening ear
to the very heart of God
one heart speaking to another
in Him is our reward.

I fell to pieces – v2
I fell to pieces
when you looked away
your sadness, mercy
letting me go astray
Sorrow, pain
for that which I caused You
my iniquity, sin
the cause of the nails
Making me fall
sunken in ashes
crying out to heaven
for your
grace to rain upon me
Needing you more
now more than ever
wanting to walk faithful
heeding your call
I fell to pieces
when you looked away
your sadness, your mercy
when I walked away

at the foot of Calvary – v2
at the foot of Calvary
in the presence of our Savior
held in his loving arms
we can find love
in what Christ gave us
bringing our cares to him
we can find love
for all eternity
at the foot of Calvary
standing with our sisters, our brothers
gathered there together, one people
holding fast to God’s light
we can find hope,
peace for tomorrow
together in Christ
we can share God’s love
at the foot of Calvary
in the arms of our Savior
knowing Easter morning
Christ’s victory, our rising
we find joy, hope in his presence
leading us on, guiding
together, in mission
the path to the Father

an anchor in the storm - 2
the habit of communing with God
humble, in a state of prayer,
meditating on God
knowing that He is there
hope in the trying times
an anchor in the storm
able to stand, to persevere
to walk on living water.

Crying out their needs
Praying for others
crying out their needs
in words sometimes unspoken
falling to our knees
Crying out for our neighbors
those in need, in pain
offering all to Jesus
for such as these he came.

Unintelligible Prayers
The prayers deep within us
musings of our hearts
sometimes with no words
tearing us apart
Unintelligible prayers
to others if they heard them
yet words of love, of petition
lifted up to heaven
To the listening ear
to the heart of God
one heart spoken to another
in him is our reward.

at the foot of Calvary
at the foot of Calvary
in the presence of our Savior
in his loving arms
we can find love
in what Christ gave us
bringing our cares to him
we can love
for all eternity
at the foot of Calvary
standing with our sisters, our brothers
gathered there together, one people
holding fast to God’s light
we can find hope,
peace for tomorrow
together in Christ
we can share God’s love
at the foot of Calvary
in the arms of our Savior
knowing Easter morning
Christ’s victory, our rising
we find joy, hope in his presence
leading us on
the path to the Father

to the foot of Calvary
following Christ
his example, his light
we bring our lives hurting
gathering others with us
to the foot of Calvary
healing at the cross
to the feet of Christ
the way to paradise
through his suffering
his rising, to glory
with us, always

bringing our lives to Jesus

Follow Jesus
Two words, our command
to love God, to love our fellow man
but two words more than enough
how to live, to drink of the cup
the be emptied, to be filled
to be righteous, worthy of grace
follow Jesus, all of our days.

Though Jesus was tired
needing time apart
going to the mountain

Jesus didn’t stay away
not staying in one place
going out there in ministry
to heal where they were
out into the world
bringing his light

We pray for those in need
Yes the world is troubled
there is pain everywhere
we pray for those in need
those struggling, in pain
we have hope for our future
we can come to the feet of Jesus
we can raise up our neighbors
sharing in our Savior’s work

As Christ led them
out of Capernaum
the whole city had heard him
other seeds to be sown
other fields to work in
other seas to fish

that give me hope
Knowing we can help
that we can share in Christ’s ministry
that we can help to heal others
in this time and place
We are called
to share our hope, God’s message
all of us able
to bring them the light
the light of our Savior
his love washing over us
overflowing, a wellspring of heaven
Christ’s example, the life of the prophets
all of the disciples down to this age.

Though imperfect, clearly human
Job knew suffering
yet never cursing the master
God on the throne
in the place of honor
only later questioning
asking for the explanation
