Their master before them
kneeling, washing their feet
a simple gesture,
an example of service
God come to earth
the Messiah before them
knowing what was to come
the anguish about to unravel
the skein, minutes, the thread of time
his life in the balance, still washing their feet
before the horror of tomorrow
the mock trial, the judgment
by God’s chosen people
the crown of thorns, mocking
nailed to the rugged cross,
sweating, bleeding, no mercy
covered by his blood and their spit
hanging to die, just hours after
this moment of compassion
of showing the disciples
caring for each other
this Messiah, our king
here spending final moments with them
even the betrayer, his feet
washed by our Savior
God fully human
