How brightly they burn
our palms, our hosannas
laid before Jesus
our Savior, our Master
our joy of Sunday
How quickly they burn
consuming our passion
not instantly triumphant
overthrowing Rome
their brutal oppression
How quickly they change
the week’s transformation
the ashes of sorrow
calling for His death
for Christ’s crucifixion
