I suppose it is our nature
to be selfish, controlling,
we try to name our family
to put boundaries on
responsibility.
we ask, with Cain, his ancient
question,
“Am I my brother’s keeper?”,
yet wanting a different
answer
to be able to keep our stuff
to shut our door to our
neighbors.
we find fault, setting
limits,
judging their work ethic,
lazy,
setting them apart,
unworthy,
we try to limit the number
of those to whom we owe
something;
but they are God’s
messengers
hidden in those we cast out
God speaks to us, sometimes,
through those hard to love.
