a burst of words
spewed far too quickly
the survival instinct
overcoming faith
these words of Peter,
spoken in anguish,
“I do not know this man,”
his brother, the Christ.
How much harder
these words casually
spoken
without thinking of their
consequence;
in the cock crowing
conviction
as if exposed, naked,
the words hanging,
in the air that night.
