Crimson bars spread
between the rows of white;
Under the stars
our Freedom burns bright
The blood of our heroes
given for us, offered to keep us safe;
Standing watch in the darkness
that we would remain free
The true cost of Freedom
the blood of our youth;
Standing guard, on station,
in the dark places out there

crimson bars
I began writing the title for this poem
at the Poet’s Corner,
our monthly poetry group,
Suncook Senior Center
after hearing again a reading of the poem,
“Barbara Frietchie”
by John Greenleaf Whittier
&
Star Spangled Banner,
based on the poem, “Defence of Fort McHenry”,
written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer
and amateur poet Francis Scott Key
&
New Hampshire Primary, January 10, 2012
&

“Whose Banner Are We Carrying
inspired by
the readings at
1st meeting of
a poetry group,
at the Suncook
Senior Center
Allenstown, NH
including the
poem,
“Barbara
Frietchie,” a poem from the Civil War era
by the
American poet John Greenleaf Whittier
and the video
played by the director
by third
graders of Tussing Elementary School,
Colonial
Heights, Virginia
