Angry Thorns – v2

A different vine,
not of God, living,
of man instead,
created from the devil

The crown for Jesus,
the cross he bore
neither gently given
not gingerly placed,
not woven with beauty

Angry thorns of power
thrust upon him, exacting revenge,
making Christ a toy king
humiliation, the rough-hewn cross
a mark of a criminal

Mocking his power, God’s mercy
his life, his ministry
suffering for us,
on the cross dying
pain in this sacrifice

Cruel crown of thorns
cutting into flesh
abject humanity of Jesus
of God come down
Christ here with us

The mark of the false trial
Pilate’s sign above the cross
all seeking to diminish, to negate
the power in the Christ
