with his words, with his actions
perhaps more for us than for his time
for the weak, for the voiceless
for the poor in this life
For the poor, the oppressed
those with limited resources
speaking words of truth to power
overturning the tables
scattering their treasure
Christ made a statement
a challenge to each believer
a call for our action, to arms
to speak for the poor,
the oppressed in our midst
For the poor, the oppressed
those with limited resources
speaking words of truth to power
overturning their tables
scattering their treasure
We are to speak as Christ did
to overturn the tables,
their callous grip on power
to scatter the unbalanced scales
to give voice to those on the margin

Jesus cleansing the Temple
sermon by Ziegler Award winner,
Reverend Gary Richards
speaking of the Methodist Movement as a
Resistance Movement,
something that made some people very uncomfortable,
including one long-time Methodist who probably was
thinking of John Wesley’s words, “Make all you can, save all you can, give all
you can.”
