a bit of the earth, the ashes
a cross upon our forehead
a bit of the dust from which we were created
a mark of our God
a sign of our mortality and our penitence
aware of our great sin
needing God to heal us
to make us right with him
We sit in silence
the glowering doom
the passion now before us
Christ dying in the gloom
Covered not with ashes but with blood
his life poured out for us
making me even more mindful
that it is to dust I will return
