Ashes on our hearts
these images seared, burned
upon our hearts, our minds
smoke in our lungs, heavy,
heavy chains of sorrow
Remembering all too well
harkening back to the trial
the lies, our spit upon the Christ
accusing God himself of Blasphemy
Monstrous when we consider
when we slow down to remember
in the night, in our hearts
when darkness falls around us
in quiet reflection, painful,
The enormity of our evil
false imprisonment, the trial
handing God over to be sacrificed
A criminal to be hung on the cross
Tears falling, heavy,
thoughts come unbidden
of blood, of the angry mob
shouting, “Crucify! Crucify him!”
to kill the Son of God
Sweat, anguish
ancient dust, the smoke
no joy, no understanding,
the Passion of the Christ
Real the pain Christ suffered
images far too painful
the Passion of the Lord
the nails, the thorns, the shouts
a bitter taste of bile, of anger,
The dryness of His mouth
His sacrifice for us, yet,
these thoughts come unbidden, unwanted,
What we did to Christ.
