leftover chowder – v2

I gathered the stones, the ingredients,
new potatoes, onions, fresh butter,
the fish for the chowder
ready to add the milk, the cream,
a pot simmering on the stove.
 
Hard tack bread, a crisp baguette,
sliced thickly, made ready,
more of the butter set on the table,
sipping hot coffee of the morning
thick with hope, with chicory.
 
Opening the bags, the aromas,
adding fish, clams, spices,
a bouquet, a leftover chowder,
gathered from many meals,
flavors of the Vineyard.

Menemsha – v3

Menemsha, a village where time forgot
to reset the clock, frozen,
Where homes are clad in grey
hiding a joy in starting the day.
 
Menemsha, a place of sky and sun
sand and beach to have some fun
A fishing town, a fishing fleet
at the end of its main street.
 
Menemsha, the Atlantic, stormy sea,
calling you, calling me.

There is something about Menemsha
out on Martha's Vineyard,
other worldly, anachronistic,
salty, frozen in time.
 
The boats, the water,
the sun-dried houses,
a reminder to us all
of what used to be.
 
There is something about Menemsha
that we seek, that we long for,
chasing nostalgia
safe and secure.
