Even as they knew, they each knew
what was to come,
what had already been set into motion
the betrayal already begun, the contract, the price
about to be paid, the exchange made
for a purse of coins promised
his sacrifice, his death
The prophesies about to be fulfilled
as Christ alone knew
Even as they knew, they each knew
Judas ate, sitting at the one table
the sharing of the teacher’s words
his feet washed by the lamb,
sharing in the new rite
Christ offering himself,
his sacrifice, his blood, his body for us all;
Judas ate took from the loaf, from the cup
sharing in the first communion
