children's sermon, "understanding time", by Julie Hill Stites, Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, December 21, 2014

Children’s message 12/21/2014
contemporaneous notes

understanding time

-         asked children how long to Christmas?
o   3 days
o   is that a long time or a short time?
§  short time
-         asked son and daughter how long to drive here from Pennsylvania?
o   is that a long time or short time?
§  very long time
-         how can that be  that 3 days is a short time and 14 hours is a long time?
o   It depends – on what you are doing
-         how about 9 months?
o   long time
-         how about 10 days on a donkey, when pregnant, like Mary did?
o   very long time
-         when doing something fun, time gets shorter, or seems like it

-         since creation
o   getting ready for birth of Jesus
-         but salvation was not over at his birth
o   took 33 years up until Good Friday
§  reborn because of His sacrifice
-         eternity – forever
o   in heaven
o
= yesterday – is the past
= tomorrow – is the future

= Today is a gift, so we call it a present

Lord, help us to be present to enjoy the present, the time that we have been given by You.
