In Words Painful yet Familiar

Something of God’s love
revealed in his story
faithful though they rebelled
strayed from their covenants
their way contemptuous
sinning against God and him

In words painful, yet familiar
a story too often told
painful in the telling
but words we need to hear
of God’s faithfulness ever
his arms opened wide
though we spit in his face
too confident in our pride

Faithful though we are unfaithful

The prophet wearing God’s sandals
walking a journey of sorrow
faithful to his covenant
though the people are unfaithful
a lesson in his life
in ways we can perceive
a model of our rebellion
when we sin against God

But he is faithful
remembering his promise
though we are unfaithful
God still doing his part
not forgetting his children
even when we stray
abandon and reject him
when we turn and run away

There beside us
hope against hope
that we would return to him
each a prodigal child
faithful though we are unfaithful
arms open wide
gracious when we cleave to him
forgiving our sins always
