we are allowed into the mystery
the power of this moment
not just words in our bible
but in a human face
we see the love of God
in the tears in his eyes
knowing that the time had come
the kingdom had arrived
standing before him in the Jordan River
the Messiah, the One,
the hope of mankind had come
through the eyes of John
his prophetic witness
what he was appointed to do
from before his birth
we see the singular moment
the moment he had waited for
Christ come to the Jordan
the Word made flesh
the Light of the world
this one crying out in the wilderness
being the servant, the prophet
preparing the way, crying out, “repent!”,
for the One to come
standing in the water
there at the Jordan
washing their bodies clean
washing away their sins
tirelessly doing God’s work
preparing the way for Him
looking up from his work
washing the people
into the face of Jesus
falling to his knees
unfit to wash the Master
all too aware of his flesh
through the eyes of John
we see the Christ,
as for the first time
the tears we share with him
when he first saw Jesus
all of the work fulfilled
there in the muddy Jordan
the Messiah now baptized
Jesus readied for His work
touched by the Spirit, as a dove,
sent out to the desert
