was this Jesus that loved us

A new command, a new teaching
here in the upper room
spoken to us on that night
the night of his betrayal

Telling us to go further
beyond the ancient law
to love as we love
our neighbors as ourselves

To love instead as Christ loved
sacrificing to God
a fragrant offering given
that we would be free

Was this Jesus who loved us
or was this the Christ
God here among us
Love come down from heaven
offering life to us
