When Christ chose the Cross

The words of the law
the new command
to love our neighbors
as Christ loved us
perhaps oblique, opaque
hard to understand
in the stillness of the upper room

The words on Thursday night
there in the upper room
informed with power Good Friday
when Christ chose the cross
when he became the Lamb
submissive to God
that we would live again
